About the Capital District Trail Network
The region is at the nexus of the 750-mile New York Empire State Trail. The Empire State Trail connects New York City with the Canadian Border via the Hudson River Valley Greenway and Champlain Canal Trail, and Albany with Buffalo via the Erie Canlway. It serves as the backbone of the Capital Region's nearly 200-mile trail system that attracts about 2-million users each year.
CDTC collects trail user data regularly. A trail count can be requested by completing this form.
Creating a seamless network of regional trails throughout all four counties included in the CDTC area is a key priority of the New Visions 2050 Plan.

The Transportation Council’s Active Transportation Planning Advisory Committee, formerly known as the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, was born out of the 1997 New Visions plan. The Active Transportation Planning Advisory Committee continues to be very active, meeting regularly and dealing with issues ranging from public education to facility planning. The members provide technical guidance on Community and Transportation Linkage Program projects and other bicycle and pedestrian-related projects throughout the region.
The organizations that are presently represented on the advisory committee include: local municipalities, NYS Department of Transportation, NYS Department of Health, Guilderland Pathways Committee, Saratoga County Heritage Trails Committee, CDTA, Hudson River Valley Greenway, the New York Bicycling Coalition and the Mohawk Hudson Cycling Club among others. Other organizations or interested private citizens are encouraged to join the task force to raise their concerns regarding bicycling and walking in the Capital District.
The Active Transportation Planning Advisory Committee generally meets the second Tuesday of the month at the Transportation Council office. All meetings are open to the public.
