The Capital District Transportation Committee invites the public to provide feedback on the Smart Mobility Toolbox: Smart Community Solutions for the Capital Region.

ALBANY, NY August 9, 2022 – The Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) is pleased to announce that the draft Smart Community Solutions for the Capital Region, or Smart Mobility Toolbox, is available for public comment. The Smart Communities Toolbox, developed over the past year, will serve as a guide for implementing Smart Communities projects in the Capital Region. It will identify common interests and opportunities in the region for introducing technology.

A “SMART City” is a designation given to cities that incorporate a range of technologies into infrastructure and operations in order to improve the delivery of services, reduce energy and resource consumption, increase safety, and expand access and mobility. Technologies like Smart LED Streetlights, e-scooter and bike share, mobility hubs, and mobile payment apps for parking or transportation services, are innovative strategies for improving mobility in the Capital Region and creating a 21st Century transportation network.

CDTC invites the public to view the Toolbox, watch a series of short videos that feature discussions with local officials about emerging technologies being used in the Capital Region, and take a short survey at www.cdtcsmartmobility.com/toolbox. Survey responses will help CDTC gauge the level of comfort with advanced technologies in the Capital Region. For example, more and more services and payment systems are shifting to smartphone applications. There’s potential to grow those applications and platforms if public sentiments are favorable. But some commuters and users of the transportation system may be less comfortable, reducing their access to new transportation choices or opportunities to save money on transportation.

“The Smart Mobility Toolbox will inform CDTC and communities within the Capital District as to the types of transportation related technologies that make the most sense to use and have the best chance to address ongoing transportation issues. Some are already in use such as Smart LED streetlights, transit signal priority, and electric vehicle charging stations, while others are being considered in the future. The Toolbox identifies a variety of strategies that can maximize benefits to the users of the transportation system”, said CDTC Executive Director Sandy Misiewicz.
