The Transportation Council's Safety and Security Planning Program

The Transportation Council maintains an active and ongoing safety program to assist NYSDOT and local governments with reducing crashes on the roadway systems they own and maintain. A data driven safety program based on crash data analysis allows communities and agencies to better target limited financial resources to transportation investments that have the greatest impact on safety. Increasingly, transportation system programs are being developed to identify safety deficient locations before a serious crash occurs. The Transportation Council's Community Planning Technical Assistance Program can offer local governments assistance with crash data analysis. 

To reinforce the need for a data driven safety program, federal requirements now include performance measures for safety and require the state and the Transportation Councilto set targets to reduce the number and rate of fatal and serious injury crashes as well as reducing the number of fatal and serious injury crashes involving non-motorized roadway system users on all public roads. 

Pedestrian Safety in New York State

Safety Education Toolkit and Resources

CDTC collaborated with the New York MPOs to develop a safety education resources webpage with outreach materials, design and policy guidance.

Local Road Safety Action Plan

Crash data, causal factors and local road context are reviewed to identify strategies that reduce crashes on roadways owned and maintained by counties, cities, towns and villages.

Regional Operations & Safety Advisory

Federal, state, regional and local government agencies, authorities, and law enforcement coordinate transportation operations and safety activities through this Committee.

Publicly Available Crash Data

Access publicly available New York State Department of Motor Vehicles crash data for your community via the web based Traffic Safety Statistical Repository.

Highway Safety Improvement Program

This program provides federal funding for capital safety projects on publicly owned roadways that reduce the risk of fatal and serious injury crashes.
