The Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) is holding a Regional Safety Summit on Wednesday, June 13th to support the development of a Regional Safety Action Plan. CDTC’s region includes Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and Saratoga Counties, with the exception of the Town of Moreau and the Village of South Glens Falls. The Summit is the first region wide opportunity for traffic safety professionals, law enforcement, elected officials, educators, concerned citizens and the general public to share their comments, thoughts and ideas on reducing fatalities and serious injuries for all users of the region’s transportation system.
The June 13th Summit will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Crossings of Colonie, 580 Albany Shaker Rd, Loudonville, NY 12211. Registration is strongly encouraged as space is limited. Following a welcome by CDTC Executive Director Michael V. Franchini, the consultant team, led by VHB, will present on the purpose of the Regional Safety Action Plan, some initial findings and the goals of the Summit. The attendees will then hear from a panel of local and state representatives on their perspectives on transportation safety. The Summit will conclude with break out groups to discuss an urban and rural case study followed by a group discussion and next steps. The discussion will focus on strategies that can be considered or better promoted to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on the region’s roadways, particularly those owned and maintained by Cities, Towns, Villages and Counties.
The Regional Safety Action Plan will be modeled after the 2017 New York State Strategic Highway Safety Plan but tailored to the context of the Capital District. As a data driven document, the region’s crash data and crash causal factors will be reviewed to assist in the identification of engineering, education and enforcement strategies that have the greatest potential to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes and reduce crash rates. The planning process is expected to continue throughout 2018 with ongoing public engagement opportunities and a second workshop in the fall.
Michael Franchini, Executive Director of the Capital District Transportation Committee, says that “Crashes on our roads and highways have the potential to impact all of us, and there are very concerning trends showing that these crashes and their resulting fatalities and serious injuries are increasing for certain populations and certain users. We need to be proactive and develop a plan now to reduce or eliminate these crashes on our roads and highways.”
